Jacob’s Pillow, the only National Landmark dedicated to dance, opens archives to fans
In 1933, modern dance pioneer Ted Shawn launched his groundbreaking all-male dance company from his barn studio in Becket. Jacob’s Pillow has since evolved into an internationally recognized site for groundbreaking art, hosting more than 50 dance companies and over 500 free events each year. In addition to performances, Jacob’s Pillow is home to one of the most prestigious training programs in the country.
For the first time in its 88-year history, the festival has been canceled. Instead, has announced a virtual festival and content from the Jacob’s Pillow archives is being released weekly and Norton Owen, director of preservation is curating online “PillowTalks,” discussions between artists and the Jacob’s Pillow community. PillowVoices: Dance Through Time, a podcast, is being released monthly. The website has a whole selection of virtual programming, including an interactive quiz about festival performances and dancers, while the online festival includes master classes, performances and special events.
